It was named in honor of Walter Seton Schmidt, Class of 1905, who was the principal donor. The original cost of the structure was $ 260,000.00. It was dedicated in May, 1926. The building originally housed the University Library including the high vaulted Mary G. Lodge Reading Room. It also housed Bellarmine Chapel, classrooms and the seismographic station.
