Biographical / Historical
Joseph P. Viviano was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a member of the Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio) men's basketball team while attending the University. A forward, Viviano lettered three years in basketball, was team Most Valuable Player in 1958 and 1959, and was named Second Team All-NIT in 1958. He is a member of the Xavier 1,000-Point Club, having led the team in scoring his junior and senior years as well as leading the team in rebounding his junior year. During his senior year, he was the team's co-captain with fellow Hall of Famer Hank Stein. Viviano was nicknamed "Mr. Dependable" during his playing days.
During Viviano's Xavier basketball career, the Musketeers won the 1958 National Invitation Tournament Championship with a 78-74 overtime victory over the University of Dayton. They were coached by James (Jim) McCafferty.
After graduating from Xavier, Viviano was selected in the tenth round of the 1959 NBA Draft by the Cincinnati Royals. He served as president and chief operating officer of Hershey Foods from 1994 until he was named vice chairman in 1998. He also served as a member of the Xavier University Board of Trustees.
