Scope and Contents

Scrapbook contains clippings from the Cincinnati Enquirer and other Cincinnati newspapers regarding World War I from 1914-1919. The clippings describe the effects of war on Europe and its citizens, the 1918 influenza pandemic, and Cincinnati's response to the war. Laid in the back of the scrapbook are handbills and leaflets in both German and English from the Cincinnati Branch of the American Union Against Militarism and a resolution the Conference of Pastors of Various German Protestant Denominations of the States of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. On the front cover a label reads "Wilbur L. (or S.) Domeck, 1915, Special Clippings of European War. 1914 to 1919." On the inside of the front cover, a label reads " Mrs. Emma Domeck for Wilbur - Special Clippings of European War of 1914."

Biography of Emma and Wilbur Domeck

Emma (Endebrock) Domeck was born around 1883 or 1884 in Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1884, and married Louis Domeck in 1906 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Wilbur Domeck was born in Cincinnati to Emma and Louis in 1908. In various census records, Emma's middle initial appears as H. or A., and her obituary lists it as A. Emma worked at home and her husband Louis was a mill hand. At the time of the scrapbook's creation, the family lived on Poplar Street in Ward 21 of Cincinnati.

Custodial History

Donor indicated that he was given the scrapbook by a neighbor who had no relation to the scrapbook creators. It is unclear how the scrapbook passed out of the family.
