History of Xavier University
Xavier University was founded in 1831 as the Athenaeum. In 1840 the Society of Jesus took control of the school and renamed it St. Xavier College. It was renamed as Xavier University in 1930. During the period of this record book, the college was divided into two courses: classical and commercial. The classical course consisted of a collegiate department and an academic department, which was comparable to high schools at that time.
